What to Expect: Trucking on ChristmasFor essential workers like truckers, Christmas Day is just another workday. There are ways for truckers to connect with family or find places displaying Christmas spirit, but it’s still never easy working on a holiday. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day bring specific difficulties and some benefits for truckers working the road. Particular closures and celebrations might add to stress and congestion, but working on a holiday also has its benefits.
Closures That Affect Trucking on Christmas
With Christmas being a national holiday, the day is observed by many, leading to certain stores and places being closed. Some locations even close early on Christmas Eve, so planning accordingly if you’re working is essential. On Christmas Day, places like the post office, the bank, and most grocery stores will be closed. Finding ways to deal with holidays on the road isn’t easy, and these closures don’t make it any easier. Planning accordingly and loading up on whatever you need will help when holiday closures affect the workday.
What’s Open on Christmas Day?
Not everyone celebrates Christmas, so there is still a chance to find something open. Some convenience stores like CVS and Walgreens have specific locations open on Christmas Day but may close earlier than usual. There are many other ways to spend Christmas away from home and feel the holiday spirit. As far as restaurants, Chinese ones may be open on the day.
Celebrations That Can Affect Traffic on Christmas
The roads are usually clear, with so many places closed on Christmas and many people having their days off. Less traffic is bliss until a parade or a holiday celebration comes around. Luckily, one of the year’s biggest parades, the Rose Parade, doesn’t happen until January 1st, but many towns are having their celebrations, leading to traffic congestion. If you have time to watch a parade, it’s a great way to maintain traditions while on the road. If you’re just trying to pass through on your route, avoiding small towns that host Christmas celebrations is a good decision when trying to stay away from traffic.
Working on a holiday, especially if it is important to you, is always tricky. Closures and congestion caused by celebrations can cause trouble for truckers working Christmas Day, but it has benefits, too.
