Winter has come, and although the season doesn’t officially start until Dec. 21st, the low temperatures aren’t waiting for their debut. Truckers work days, weeks, or months, especially during the cold winter. Finding ways to stay warm through planning, gadgets, clothing, and more becomes essential.

Pre-Trip Tips for Staying Warm

Before leaving your job, check weather forecasts for all the areas you’ll be driving through. The weather channel is an excellent source for storm watches, and forecasts are available up to 10 days ahead. Avoid going through areas with storms and prepare for driving in the snow if it’s on the radar. Check weather conditions before a trip will also help determine what you need to prepare for your truck to endure whatever you encounter.

Check the weather in all the cities you’ll drive through and plan your route accordingly. If an alternate route can prevent you from dangerous roads or bad road conditions, checking ahead may be the only way to avoid turbulence during your trip.

Gadgets for Staying Warm on the Road

Sometimes, the car heater doesn’t cut it, and other times, you can’t use it; this is where heating gadgets will save the day. Battery-powered or rechargeable heaters are an option for staying warm without using the car heater, but it’s not a solution for everyone. One of the most notable items to have when the chill hits is hand warmers.

These hand warmers will come in handy on the road.

They come in multiple packs, are easily activated, and can be tucked away in your clothes for instant warmth. Use them to warm your hands when the steering wheel feels like you’re holding icicles, and put them in your shoes to warm your feet or anywhere else on your body.

They can get surprisingly hot, so be careful not to put them directly on your skin unless you’re holding them in your hand. When trucking in winter, these hand-warmer packs will become your best friend. Now, we only need warming face masks to avoid red, frozen noses.

Stay Warm with Clothing

The solution for beating the cold may be apparent: wear a jacket, but it’s not that easy when working on the road. Wearing an oversized, puffy, warm jacket behind the wheel is not always comfortable, especially after hours of driving. Keep the coat on the side for trips outside the truck and turn to warm layers instead.

Layering with the proper fabric can make all the difference when comfort is essential. Wool clothing can be thin but very warm, so try to incorporate wool into your winter wardrobe, even if it’s just in socks.

Wearing thermals under your usual clothing is a great way to stay warm without wearing a jacket or compromising your everyday style. Don’t forget to include a beanie in your winter arsenal to keep your head and ears warm, or opt for earmuffs if that is more your style.

Staying warm on the road is vital for having a comfortable and safe work trip. Preparing for winter weather can help avoid severe weather conditions. Turn to gadgets and warm clothes when hitting the long haul this season.
