Trucking on Haunted HighwaysTruckers traverse countless roads and highways each year. In honor of spooky season, we’re shining a light on some highways that may be considered haunted. Whether you believe in hauntings or not, the folklore is interesting. Here are some highways we found with scary stories associated with them. One of them might be on your next trucking route, so beware!
I-4 in Sanford, FL. The Haunted Bridge
Interstate 4 runs from Tampa to Daytona Beach, but the stretch of highway over the St. Johns River Bridge over Lake Monroe has some haunted history still following it. Known today as “The Dead Zone,” the section of the road is allegedly haunted, and drivers have reportedly seen hitchhiking ghosts and floating orbs. The most significant phenomena that have drivers stumped are the loss of phone reception and reported accidents over the years. It’s times like these where knowing how to read a road map comes in handy. Stories suggest the stretch of highway was built over the graves of workers who succumbed to yellow fever years ago. Believe the folklore or not, watch for possible electronic failures when trucking in these areas.
Former Route 666-The Devil’s Highway
Although renumbered to U.S. 491, U.S. 666 was known as the Devil’s Highway and has haunted drivers for some time. The Highway received its numerical identification because it’s the sixth branch of Route 66, the historic U.S. highway. Many believe the Devil’s Highway was rightfully named due to its hazardous curves, which have led to numerous accidents. Whether you see apparitions on the road or are just trucking by, take caution traversing this stretch.
Clinton Road-Dead Man’s Curve
New Jersey is a common area when looking for haunted roads, and Clinton Road in West Milford is one of them. With 10 miles of nothing but the woods around you, the darkness will surely make any driver see things. The most common sightings on Clinton Road include ghost tailgaters with lights that disappear. There are also ghost sightings on the road, like a little boy under the bridge at “Dead Man’s Curve”. Don’t be a distracted driver when driving down this road. There might be things that catch you by surprise.
