Men’s Health Month For Truckers
Men’s Health Month For Truckers
Men's Health Awareness is important for truckers.

June is Men’s Health Awareness Month, and we are highlighting the importance of observing it, especially for truckers. Men are more susceptible to specific health issues, and ensuring everything is functioning correctly is vital. For those working the road, observing your health isn’t as easy, but it still shouldn’t be overlooked. Next year, we’ll explore Women’s Health Month, but for now, we’re closing out June by examining some of the health issues that affect men and how to help combat them, even while working on the road.

Men’s Diseases and Illnesses Truckers Should Monitor

Men’s health encompasses many aspects, and physical health is a significant one. Certain diseases and illnesses disproportionately affect men, and although maintaining overall good health is essential for truckers, checking for the major ones should be a priority. Plan an annual visit with your primary care physician whenever you know you’ll be back home. Think of it like maintaining yourself the same way you maintain your vehicle for optimal performance during each run.

Terminal illnesses and life-threatening diseases should be watched the most, with specific issues becoming more prevalent at older ages. Prostate, colon, and lung cancer are most common among men and should be screened regularly, particularly for those over 40. Diabetes, obesity, and heart disease affect both men and women, but men are more prone to cardiovascular diseases, which is essential to monitor while on the road. Certain factors of the job can contribute to cardiovascular issues; therefore, maintaining a healthy diet while on the road can help prevent these health concerns. Mentioning exercise for truckers is often taboo, but we’re still going to do it because it remains essential. Many gyms have large parking lots where you can park, but developing even a simple stretching routine can have a profoundly positive influence on overall health.

Salads can be a great healthy option for a meal on the road. Pack any wet ingredients, such as dressing, separately until you’re ready to eat, and add different textures, like crunchy vegetables, nuts, or chips, to add variety.

Men’s Mental Health Awareness

Health comes in various forms, and aside from physical health, men’s mental health is also beneficial to consider, especially for truckers. Mental health isn’t an easy topic to discuss, but it may be the most crucial awareness to focus on. A significant aspect of cognitive health is stress awareness, which is a contributor to mental health issues. Sometimes, being on the road for so long can bring moments of loneliness, which can hurt mental health negatively. Social connections are important for men and can be harder to maintain while on the road. Try making friends with fellow truckers, especially those you see often who share similar routes and schedules, as this can help fill the voids of connection left by long periods on the road. Taking care of your brain is just as important as physical health; don’t neglect it, particularly if you work the road.

Other Health Problems Male Truckers May Experience

Screenings for cancer are vital for men, but there are other illnesses men are susceptible to as well. Dealing with truck driver health concerns while on the road is more challenging but still as important, regardless of the issue. Gout and shingles are other diseases men face more often. Some of these diseases, like gout, can be caused by different problems common to men, like obesity, diabetes, etc. Gout is a painful inflammation of the joints, and flare-ups can occur at any time, causing pain and discomfort that can last for several days or even a week.

Shingles are an uncomfortable rash that can occur in anyone who has had chickenpox before, affecting men more often than women. Taking care of yourself should be a regular activity and this June we’re highlighting men’s diseases and illnesses in hopes of preventing them in the future.
