Are You Ready for CVSA’s International Road Check?
Are You Ready for CVSA’s International Road Check?
Prepare for CVSA's International Road Check

The CVSA holds its international road check every year, and this year, it’s scheduled for May 14-16, 2024. Truck drivers should prepare for inspections on themselves and their vehicles during road check days. The CVSA focuses on specific categories, and inspectors wait to disperse clipboards when ready.

What is the International Road check?

The road check is a three-day annual regulatory compliance enforcement and commercial vehicle inspection initiative. Its primary purpose is to improve vehicle safety and enhance overall road safety. Inspectors will be at weigh/inspection stations and temporary sites and use mobile patrols to verify compliance.

What Will the Inspection Cover?

The specific categories that inspections will cover are different each year. Last year, the CVSA covered anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and cargo securement. This time, the CVSA focuses its international road check on tractor protection systems and alcohol and controlled substance possession.

Drivers will also be inspected for alcohol or drug possession.

Some essential components the tractor system inspection will include are:

-tractor protection valve

-trailer supply valve

-anti-bleed back valve

The driver portion of the inspection will include checking:

-drivers’ operating credentials

-hours of service documentation

-DACH status (in the US)

-seat belt usage

-alcohol and drug impairment

How to Prepare for CVSA’s International Road Check

The CVSA has provided an inspection outline on being a safe driver and properly checking tractor protection systems. There’s also a cheat sheet covering what the driver portion will cover. Drivers can take these checklists and ensure their vehicles and themselves are compliant before the inspection to ensure a smooth and stress-free process.

Once a vehicle and driver pass their inspection, they receive a valid CVSA decal for three months.
